| - All Creatures #2 - - - - Random thought of the Day:
It struck me how brand crazy we Americans are today. Take cars, for example. Companys like Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus are made solely to cater to American affluence. They do not exist in their native Japan. We Americans need whole new brand names so we can clearly project wealth and status with a single word. It simply won't do to drive a Honda Integra (Acura RSX), Nissan Skyline (Infinity G35), or a Toyota Soarer (Lexus SC300). Even Costco has their Kirkland brand so you don't have to admit to buying Costco brand clothes. Car names themselves have become alpha numeric, so you know immediately that a BMW 3 series is not as worthy as a 6 or 7. It instantly creates a false sense of inadiquacy and dissatisfaction for those who purchase a lesser model. Quality and actual needs become secondary to name and number. I realize companies have to sell products, but this artificial sense of worth and value permeates our thinking and I find we apply it to people much too readily. Anyways, I think I probably drove too much today, hence the car-centric slant to this rant.
| Random thought of the day:
Elderly people can be the kindest, nicest people or the meanest and most bitter. I guess a lifetimes worth of good or bad habits and choices really add up... I wonder how I'm shaping up...
| So I've had this Xanga for I don't know how many months and THIS is the first non-quiz post actually made by me! (Un)Fortunately, after reformatting Nat's computer, she can no longer hijack my xanga (yay!). Well, just got back from camp. I think it's amazing what a change in surroundings can do when you have a few days to just spend with God. I'd forgotten how much I'd missed it. Between worship, skits, meeting with my kids, and chillin in the director's cabin at night, I was completely worn out physically, and yet, I wish I was there for High School camp right now. I spaced out at work today, thinking about what I'm missing. Spiritual highs can be just as harsh for counselors as it is for campers.
My kids this year were interesting to say the least. One was a tiny hyper 7th grader who, so I hear, went streaking in the cabin. One was a black belt boyscout military nut (we got along great). One was quiet and shy until we discovered we both loved the history channel (he introduced me to 2 great new shows I'd missed). And the last one actually wrote a poem describing his emotions during the worship singing time. Even though they ran the gamut in terms of maturity, interests, and personalities, God really allowed me to connect with each of them in a way that was missing in previous years. I really hope I can keep in contact and, most importantly, continue to challenge them throughout the year. I know I've started going back to my old ways, so this will be as much a challenge for me as for them...
